The closest non-safari attraction to the main tourism hub. Junona Lake sits on the edge of the Tadoba buffer zone, just 14 km from Chandrapur town. Animals from the buffer frequently come to the shoreline to drink, particularly in the dry summer months (March to June), making it a productive spot for wildlife photography without a permit. The lake has maintained park areas for picnicking and recreational boating. From October to February, resident and migratory waterbirds gather along the shoreline. Best used as a low-effort midday activity between safari shifts rather than a dedicated trip.

Chandrapur Fort (30 km from Moharli Gate | 1 to 2 hours | Best visited 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM)

The political centre of the Gond dynasty for over 300 years. Construction began under Khandkya Ballal Sah in the late 15th century and was continued by Babji Ballal Shah and completed by Dhundya Ram Sah in the 16th century. The fort sits at the confluence of the Irai and Zarpat rivers and covers approximately 11 sq km, with stone walls running roughly 12 km (7.5 miles) at a height of 15 to 20 feet. Eight gates survive: four main gates (Jatpura, Pathanpura, Binba, and Anchaleshwar) and four smaller khidkis (Bagad, Hanuman, Vithoba, and Chor). The 16th-century Anchaleshwar Mahadev temple sits inside the fort near the eastern gate. The fort's scale is genuinely surprising for first-time visitors; this was not a minor regional outpost, but the capital of a kingdom that ruled central India for 500 years. Combine it with Mahakali Temple on the same half-day since both are in Chandrapur town.

Mahakali Temple, Chandrapur (35 km from Moharli Gate | 1 to 2 hours | Temple: 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM)

A significant Gond-era shrine dedicated to Goddess Mahakali, with deep red stone walls and a mix of Tibetan and Hindu architectural elements on the exterior. The temple holds two distinct idols of Mahakali, including a reclining statue housed in an underground tunnel beneath the main shrine. The historical gateways were built by 16th-century Gond ruler Dhundya Ram Sah and include dedicated sub-shrines for Lord Ganesh and Lord Shani. The annual Chaitra Navratri festival (April) draws large crowds and turns the surrounding area into a vibrant cultural gathering. Photography is not allowed inside the main sanctum. Located in Chandrapur town, so pair it with Chandrapur Fort on the same trip.

Ballarpur Fort (45 km from Moharli Gate | 1 to 1.5 hours | Best visited 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM)

The original Gond capital before the dynasty moved to Chandrapur. Built by Khandkya Ballal Sah on the eastern bank of the Wardha River, the rectangular fort is constructed from large black basalt blocks. Most of the internal structures are now in ruins, but the two main gates, set at right angles to each other as a defensive trap for invading forces, remain intact, along with a smaller postern gate on the riverside. Underground passages and hidden chambers add to the site's atmosphere. The fort is 16 km from Chandrapur town, so it can be combined with Chandrapur Fort and Mahakali Temple in a single day trip covering all three Gond-era sites.

Manikgad Fort (75 km from Moharli Gate | 3 to 4 hours including trek | Best Sept to Feb)

A hill fort in the Jiwati tehsil, standing at a notable height amid dense forest and rugged terrain. Associated with the Mana Naga rulers before passing to the Gond dynasty, Manikgad is now largely in ruins but retains its historic gateways, stone structures, and a carved Naga relief on the main gateway lintel that distinguishes it from later Gond architecture. The approach requires a moderate trek through isolated terrain with no facilities, food stalls, or shops at the fort base. Carry water, snacks, and a basic medical kit. Not suitable for young children or elderly visitors. Best for trekkers and offbeat history enthusiasts who want something beyond the standard Chandrapur circuit. Visit after the monsoon (September onwards) when trails are clear and the surrounding forest is green.

Markandeshwar Temple, Markanda (85 km from Moharli Gate | 1.5 to 2 hours | Temple: 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM)

Often called the Khajuraho of Vidarbha, this temple complex sits along the banks of the Wainganga River and dates to the 8th to 12th centuries CE. The complex originally held around 24 temples; only a handful survive, but the surviving structures carry detailed stone carvings of human, divine, and mythological figures that represent some of the finest mediaeval craftsmanship in Maharashtra. The stone pillars and architectural detailing reflect centuries of construction across multiple dynasties. This is a dedicated half-day trip from Tadoba (85 km each way), best planned on a rest day rather than squeezed between safaris. November to February is the most comfortable season for the visit.

Ghodazari Lake (110 km from Moharli Gate | 2 to 3 hours at the lake | Best Oct to Mar)

A British-era irrigation reservoir in the Nagbhir tehsil, surrounded by the 159 sq km Ghodazari Wildlife Sanctuary, which serves as an ecological corridor between Tadoba and Umred-Karhandla reserves. The lake holds up to 50 million cubic metres of water and attracts local wildlife and a strong roster of waterbirds, particularly between October and March. Boating availability depends on water levels and seasonal conditions. This is the farthest attraction on the list at 110 km from Moharli, so it requires a dedicated half-day or rest day. Best for birders and nature lovers who have already completed their Tadoba safaris and want a quieter half-day outdoors.
